What's New on Max in December 2024

Max's slate of original content in December is anchored by two number twos: a joker and a juror.

Joker: Folie à Deux comes to Max Dec. 13

The first is Joker: Folie à Deux, the much anticipated sequel to 2019's billion dollar comic book antihero smash Joker. While bring Lady Gaga in to serve as Harley Quinn to Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur "Joker" Fleck seemed like a surefire bet, the movie bombed with both critics and audiences upon its October theatrical release, making just $206 million worldwide against a $200 million budget. Perhaps it will find more fans when it hits Max on Friday, Dec. 13.

Clint Eastwood's final (?) film

After Joker #2 there's Juror #2 (Dec. 20), a Clint Eastwood-directed legal thriller about a journalist (played by Nicholas Hoult) who gets called for jury duty on a high-profile murder case. The stacked cast also includes Tony Collette, J.K Simmons, Chris Messina, and Kiefer Sutherland. It might be the 94-year-old Eastwood's final film. He's had a long career making movies for Warner Bros. It got great reviews. And yet it is more or less being shunted straight to streaming. Odd, but a welcome gift if you're looking for something to watch with your parents over the holidays.

The December documentary lineup includes HBO originals Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (Dec. 7), exploring the actor's personal and professional life before and after the accident that left him paralyzed. Nature of the Crime (Dec. 10) follows two men convicted of murder as teens who are preparing for their parole interviews.

There's also a new installment of HBO's long-running sports franchise. Hard Knocks: In Season With the AFC North is the first to go behind the scenes with an entire NFL division (versus a single team) and will cover the final six weeks of the regular season. The series features the Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, and Browns, and will be released as weekly episodes starting Dec. 3.

Finally, there's a new game show, Fast Friends (Dec. 19), a four-part Friends fan challenge—to include trivia, puzzles, and games—set in the Friends universe.
