Learn about every class in Final Fantasy XIV.

With Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker coming later this year, Final Fantasy XIV has never been more popular, drawing in waves of new players, Final Fantasy fans, and World of Warcraft refugees, all looking for a new MMORPG to call home. The world of Eorzea is as inviting as it is complex, and players who aren't familiar with the class and job systems of other Final Fantasy games might feel lost at the number of options available — the game has been around for more than a decade, you know.

With five classes and 18 jobs, players have a lot of choice in their characters' customization, but which job is right for you? And how do you unlock them all? Well, we've got your answers. Here's a full list of job classes for Final Fantasy XIV and how to unlock them.

Understanding the difference between class and job

In Final Fantasy XIV, classes and jobs are two different things, though they are often used interchangeably. When you start the game, you're introduced to different disciplines and choose to be a Disciple of War or a Disciple of Magic — this will determine your class. A Disciple of War uses physical melee and ranged weapons as their primary means of attack, while Disciples of Magic use magical spells or healing spells that use MP.

As you level up your class, you will be able to branch out into different jobs, but they may serve the same role. For example, a Gladiator class will become a Paladin and a Marauder will become a Warrior, but they both serve the role of tank in combat, with different abilities at their disposal. To level up your class, you must complete the quests within your guild.

Most jobs, however, were added by Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers expansion packs and aren't associated with a class, though they can be sorted into one of five roles. Also, if you choose a job you don't like, don't worry. Switching between jobs is as simple as joining the Guild and equipping the proper gear.

Tanks

The tank specializes in enduring damage and generating enmity (FFXIV's version of aggro) so that enemies won't chase other members of the party. Essentially, tanks should be drawing enemy fire and keeping their attention.

Paladin

Paladins are skilled with sword and shield, channeling holy power to stand as unbreakable walls for their allies, and symbolizes hope. The Paladin job can be unlocked by joining the Gladiator Guild, reaching level 30, and completing the Guild Quest Sylph-management and Paladin's Pledge.

Warrior

Warriors exceed in the art of causing pain, wielding giant axes that unleash massive damage. The Warrior job can be unlocked by joining the Marauder Guild, reaching level 30, and completing the quests Sylph-management and Pride and Duty (Will Take You from the Mountain).

Dark Knight

The Dark Knight class was introduced in the expansion pack, Heavensward, and are sworn to protect the people of Ishgard. To unlock the Dark Knight job, players must own Heavensward, complete the Seventh Astral Era Quests, reach Ishgard, and complete the quest Our End, given by the Ishgardian Citizen in The Pillars (X: 13.2, Y: 8.8).

Gunbreaker

The Gunbreaker class was introduced in the Shadowbringers expansion pack. Gunbreakers use a sword with a firing mechanism, similar to the weapon Squall used in Final Fantasy VIII. To unlock the Gunbreaker job, players must own Shadowbringers and be at level 60. Once that prerequisite is met, complete the quest The Makings of a Gunbreaker, given by the NPC Gods' Quiver Bow in New Gridania (X:11.5 Y:11.9).

Healer

Healers specialize in just that, healing! They use spells to heal and revive allies in battle, as well as cleanse characters and cast restorative buffs. Always thank your healer!

White Mage

White Mages wield light to heal their allies and drive them forward through battle. The White Mage job can be unlocked by joining the Conjurer's Guild, reaching level 30, and completing the quests Sylph-management and Seer Folly.

Scholar

Scholars manifest their spells through earth and air and conjure fairies to help them in battle. The Scholar job can be obtained by joining the Arcanist's Guild, reaching level 30, and completing the quests Sylph-management and Forgotten but Not Gone.

Melee DPS

DPS classes are the damage dealers of the game, and they are sorted into three subgroups: Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, and Magic Ranged DPS. Melee DPS prefer close-range combat and abilities, and like getting up close and personal with their enemies.

Monk

Monks are hand-to-hand fighters who weave intricate attacks together to bombard enemies with a flurry of kicks and punches. The Monk job can be unlocked by joining the Pugilist's Guild, reaching level 30, and completing the quests Sylph-management and Brother from Another Mother.

Dragoon

Dragoons use their lances and a combination of aerial moves and precise blows to deal massive damage to their targets. The Dragoon job can be unlocked by joining the Lancer's Guild, reaching level 30, and completing the quests Sylph-management and Eye of the Dragon.

Ninja

Ninjas have mastered the art of assassination and various styles of ninjitsu. The Ninja job can be unlocked by joining the Rogue's Guild, but unlike other classes, you can't become a Rogue at the start of the game. To become a Rogue, you must have completed level 10 class quests with any Disciple of War or Magic class, then speak to Lonwoerd in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks and complete the quests My First Daggers. Once you've become a Rogue, reach level 30 and complete the quest Sylph-management and Peasants by Day, Ninjas by Night to unlock the Ninja Job.

Samurai

Samurai wield katanas, and strike swiftly, killing the enemy before they can even react. The Samurai job was introduced in Stormblood, and in order to unlock the job, you must own Stormblood, reach level 50 as a Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic, and complete the quest The Way of the Samurai, given by an NPC in Ul'dah — Steps of Nald (X: 9.2, Y: 9.1).

To unlock the Machinist job, you must own the Heavensward expansion, complete all of the Seventh Astral Era Quests, reach the city of Ishgard, and complete the Savior of Skysteel quests, given by an NPC found in Foundation (X: 8, Y: 10).

Dancer
