This tutorial explains how to switch Ubuntu 20.10 user interface back to Unity rather than GNOME. This is for computer users who prefer Ubuntu with its innovative Unity appearance that found in version 10.04 LTS and 16.10. Now let's have fun!

Install Everything

This will install our beloved Unity desktop environment once again to Ubuntu. This includes LightDM, CompizConfig Settings Manager, Unity Tweak Tool and Lenses.

Command:

$ sudo apt-get install unity-session unity-lens-applications unity-lens-files unity-tweak-tool compizconfig-settings-manager light-themes lightdm

Restart

Reboot your system and once landed on login screen, you should see that screen is now changed back to the Unity's login screen we all know but with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS version. Click white circle button and select Unity (Default) among other choices and login.

Enjoy

Now your Ubuntu groovy Gorilla meets Unity once again. Faster, lighter, simpler, with HUD and global menu. Congratulations!

 

Global menu works with LibreOffice Writer and file manager.

Head's Up Display works once again in 2020.

And the system settings goes back simpler.
