Summary

You will go through ten steps after doing all the preparations.
  • 1) Language Selection
  • 2) Keyboard Selection
  • 3) Network Selection
  • 4) Software Selection
  • 5) Disk Setup Selection
  • 6) Disk Partitioning & Bootloader Setup
  • 7) Timezone Setup
  • 8) Username Setup
  • 9) Waiting
  • 10) Finish

Preparations

You will prepare one bootable Kubuntu media, two disk partitions at least, and going to installation from one usb flash drive.
  • Backup: for users who had other operating system in the computer, make backup of all your important data correctly to safe external storage.
  • Create bootable Kubuntu: if you don't have Kubuntu 20.04 yet, download here. If you don't know how to make bootable usb flash disk.
  • Create disk partitions: carefully format your hard disk drive so you have 3 partitions: first is >=1GB, second is >=100MB, and third is >=20GB. The first will be swap, second will be efi, and third will be root partition. To install Kubuntu into a usb flash drive or external storage, simply do these to that storage instead of hard disk drive. Ask an experienced user near you if you do not have idea how to do these.

Booting

Now turn on your computer to boot into USB. You should find Kubuntu blue logo glowing on your screen. Finally you enter Kubuntu desktop will full functionalities. In this very desktop you will perform installation.

First - Language

Select English and continue.

Second - Keyboard

Select English (US) and then continue.

Third - Networking

Select 'I don't want to connect...' and then continue.

Fourth - Software

Select Normal Installation and then continue.

Fifth - Disk Setup

  • Select Manual and continue.
  • If you asked to unmount some partitions, accept it.

Sixth - Disk Partitioning

This is the most important step. All kinds of special installation whether it is dualboot, UEFI, or external rely on this. It is divided into four steps.
  • First, select smallest partition > Change > format it to FAT32 filesystem > give it mount point /boot/efi > OK. Skip this if your computer is BIOS Legacy and not UEFI.
  • Second, select mid sized partition > Change > format it to SWAP > OK.
  • Third, select biggest partition > Change > format it to EXT4 Journaling Filesystem (choose EXT2 instead for usb flash disk drive installation) > give it mount point /. This is the root partition.
  • Fourth, select address location for bootloader the same as address location for disk drive where your install Kubuntu into. If your root partition is sda1, then bootloader should be in sda. If your root is sdb1, then bootloader sdb. And so on.
Before disk partitioning:

Make EFI partition:

Make SWAP partition:

Make ROOT partition:

Put bootloader in right location and click Install Now:
  • Normal install: select address the same as hard disk address where you made Kubuntu root partition.
  • Dualboot install: same as normal install.
  • External hard disk drive install: select address the same as external HDD address where you made Kubuntu root partition.
  • Flash drive installation: select address the same as flash drive address where you made Kubuntu root partition.

Seventh - Timezone

Select your timezone. For example, I select Asia/Jakarta as I live in Indonesia.

Eighth - Username

Create your own username and password. Remember that this password will be your administrator password on Kubuntu.

Ninth - Wait

Wait for some fifteen minutes. While waiting, you may enjoy amusing slideshow presented by Kubuntu.

Tenth - Finish

This is what we are waiting for! Once completed, the installation says "...has finished" and asks you to "Restart Now". Simply accept it and remove the installer flash disk drive. Once restarted, you will enjoy your computer anew with Kubuntu.

Congratulations!
