Power Supply Units (PSUs) are one of the most critical pieces of hardware that any PC gamer looking to build their rig should consider carefully. Without a strong enough PSU to juice up your graphics and processing, your computer won't even turn on. The amount of power (and efficiency) that you need will vary depending on how strong your other pieces of hardware are, but in general, it's good to have a powerful one in case you plan on upgrading at some point. With that in mind, we think that the Corsair RM750x is the best PSU on the market, as it offers a large amount of power and a fantastic efficiency rating for a great price.

Best Overall: Corsair RM750x

The Corsair RM750x is hands down the best overall PSU on the market. It offers 750W of power, which is more than enough for most mainstream graphics cards and processors, and it will be a perfect amount for high-end gaming rigs. Also, it has an 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating, which is one of the best efficiency ratings there is for PSUs.

Its 120mm fan does a great job of keeping the PSU cool through gaming sessions, and it does so quietly, so you don't have to deal with a lot of noise. Lastly, it's fully modular, which means that you can attach or detach cables as needed instead of having to deal with permanently-attached ones.

At the end of the day, the Corsair RM750x is a fantastic PSU that combines high power with superb efficiency. It's a little pricey, but considering the high performance, it's still a great deal. Unless you happen to have an incredibly beefy dual-GPU type of PC gaming rig, this power supply will be perfect for you.

Pros:

  • Excellent power amount
  • Excellent efficiency
  • Modular
  • Quiet during use

Cons:

  • Not for extreme power users

The PSU for U

The Corsair RM750x strikes a perfect balance between power and efficiency, making it a superb choice for most PC gamers.

Best Elite Pick: ASUS ROG Thor 1200

If you do happen to be running a ridiculous dual-GPU setup with monster graphics cards like the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti, then we recommend picking yourself up an ASUS ROG Thor 1200. It's got 1,200W of power and an 80 Plus Platinum efficiency rating, which means that it will have no problem at all keeping even the beefiest PC rig juiced up during intensive use. Also, it's fully modular, and it's got a killer 135mm fan. It cools efficiently and isn't loud at all, which is always a plus.

To be honest, there's no real reason to get a PSU this powerful unless you have a monster setup like the one described above. The Corsair RM750x will be perfect for most people; you should only opt for the ASUS ROG Thor 1200 if you really need it.

Pros:

  • Huge power amount
  • Awesome efficiency
  • Modular
  • Quiet during use

Cons:

  • Very expensive

Best Elite Pick

ASUS ROG Thor 1200

The cavalry has arrived

The ASUS ROG Thor 1200 is an expensive monster PSU that should only be opted for if you have an extremely powerful rig with top-notch dual GPUs.

Best Mid-Range: Corsair RM650x

The Corsair RM650x is a strong mid-range PSU that will be capable of powering all mid-level gaming rigs with ease. You can also use it with some high-end rigs that lean towards mid-level. The Corsair RM650x has a solid power output of 650W and an efficiency rating of 80 Plus Gold. Additionally, the PSU is fully modular as well. Lastly, the 120mm cooling fan is both quiet and very capable.

This PSU is ultimately a great pick if you've got yourself a mid-level PC that you want something solid and reliable for, but you don't want to get much more PSU strength than you need or want to save a bit of money.

Pros:

  • Great efficiency
  • Quiet during use
  • More affordable

Cons:

  • Not strong enough for top-notch setups

Best Mid-Range

Corsair RM650x

Perfect for the average build

The Corsair RM650x is a more affordable, less powerful PSU that's perfect for mid-to-high level rigs.

Best Budget: MasterWatt 750

If you're putting together a budget gaming PC and need a budget PSU to match, then we recommend the MasterWatt 750. It has an excellent power output of 750W, but the efficiency rating of 80 Plus Bronze isn't great. However, it will be perfect to power a rig with low-to-medium specs. The PSU is only semi-modular as well, meaning you can only move some of the cables around. Thankfully, the 120mm fan is efficient for cooling and runs silently.

Overall, this PSU is for people who want to get their hands on a very affordable, low-end power supply that will serve their budget PC well. It's not recommended to get this PSU if you plan on upgrading your hardware in the near future.

Pros:

  • Quiet during use
  • Very affordable

Cons:

  • Not ideal for high-end builds
  • Lower efficiency
  • Only semi-modular

Best Budget

MasterWatt 750

Go low, save high

The MasterWatt 750 is a low-cost, low-power PSU that's ideal for people who need something for a low-to-mid spec budget gaming PC.

Best Compact: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GM

If you're looking to build a gaming rig that focuses on compactness, then we recommend checking out the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GM. It's got 650W of power output and an 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating, and it's got a 93mm fan that cools pretty efficiently, but not as well as the other fans on this list do. The fan also is a little bit loud when it runs, but the PSU is fully modular. It's also very compact, which makes it perfect for fitting into smaller PC cases. It packs the power of a mid-range PSU into the size of a small budget one, and for a pretty solid price, too.

Pros:

  • Compact size
  • Powerful for its size
  • Fairly affordable
  • Fully modular

Cons:

  • Not strong enough for top-notch setups
  • A bit noisy

Best Compact

EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GM

Solid power in a small frame

The EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GM is an excellent mini-PSU that offers good strength in a small frame and for a reasonable price.

Best for Xbox One: YCCSKY Xbox One Power Supply Brick

Most PSUs are for PCs, but a lot of people forget that the original Xbox One console from 2013 had one as well. Many Xbox players who have stuck with that console over the last six years have unfortunately had to deal with Microsoft's PSU dying out on them and need a replacement to use their console again. If that's you, we recommend the YCCSKY Xbox One Power Supply Brick. It's a lot more affordable than having to go through the process of getting a new PSU from Microsoft, and it also has a better, quieter fan than the original power supply, which simply makes it better in every way.

Pros:

  • Better performance than Microsoft's option
  • Less expensive than getting an official replacement

Cons:

  • None!

Best for Xbox One

YCCSKY Xbox One Power Brick

Better in every way

The YCCSKY Xbox One Power Brick is the most effective and least expensive way to replace your faulty Xbox One PSU.

Bottom line

Ultimately, all of these different PSUs offer something different, and you're sure to find one in this list that suits your wants and/or needs. Overall, you're going to want to spend money on a quality PSU. Without power, your PC is useless, so if you have a few extra bucks, put it into the PSU purchase.

In general, though, we think that the Corsair RM750x is the best PSU on the list due to the fact it combines excellent power output with supreme efficiency and a great price. If you're a person putting together a competent PC gaming setup and want something that can effectively power it through intensive game sessions, it doesn't get much better then the Corsair RM750x.
