What you need to know
- Microsoft has announced a September 10 release date for the Surface Duo, starting at $1,399 in the U.S.
- These latest details come through a seemingly premature blog post, ahead of a likely imminent Surface Duo unveiling.
Microsoft has unveiled additional details on the Microsoft Surface Duo, marking the debut of its upcoming dual-screen smartphone, headed to store shelves on September 10. The company has confirmed a release ahead of schedule for the experimental foldable once set for holiday 2020, providing additional context around the upcoming launch.
The Microsoft Surface Duo starts at $1,399 in the U.S., according to a recent Microsoft Tech Community blog post from Frank Buchholz, senior product marketing manager at Microsoft. The device ships with two previously-reported dual 5.6-inch, 4:3 displays, bound by a 360-degree hinge, and spanning to 8.1-inches when opened flat.
"Unveiled today and shipping September 10, Surface Duo represents the next wave of mobile productivity, inspiring people to rethink what is possible with the device in their pocket," states the post. "Surface Duo delivers the easiest way to multitask on the go, bringing together the power of Microsoft 365 experiences and the full ecosystem of Android mobile apps."
Further context on what you get for that price tag remains a mystery, seemingly prematurely posted ahead of an upcoming full reveal. While we've previously reported expected Surface Duo hardware specifications, Microsoft is yet to provide its final spec sheet. The company is also yet to talk pricing for additional variants, overseas availability, or whether preorders will be offered ahead of September.
Past reports suggest the Microsoft Surface Duo will launch with a Snapdragon 855, 6GB RAM, and up to 256GB storage. It may also feature a single 11MP camera sensor, both front- and rear-facing due to its flexible hinge, and a 3460mAh battery. Expect availability through the Microsoft Store, with a deal with AT&T also reportedly in the works.
