Huawei just rolled out the AMD version of a laptop that earned an excellent review.

What you need to know

  • Huawei announced the Matebook 13 AMD Edition.
  • The laptop runs on an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor and Radeon Vega 8 graphics.
  • The Huawei Matebook 13 AMD Edition is available now starting at £699 (roughly $867).

Huawei announced the Matebook 13 AMD Edition today, an ultra-portable notebook powered by an AMD Ryzen processor. The 13-inch laptop runs on a Ryzen 5 3500U processor and Radeon Vega 8 graphics. The Matebook 13 AMD Edition is available starting today starting at £699 (roughly $867) from the Huawei Store and other select retailers. At this time, Huawei shared pricing details for the UK and did not mention a U.S. release.

The Matebook 13 AMD Edition features a 2K Huawei FullView display and has a screen-to-body ratio of 88 percent. On its sides the display has 4.4mm bezels sandwiching its 2K (2160x1440) display that has a 3:2 aspect ratio. The display has a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and supports 100 percent of the RGB color gamut.

On the inside, the Matebook 13 AMD Edition has an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor and Radeon Vega 8 graphics. It's worth noting that the Ryzen processor is from AMD's previous generation. The laptop has dual-channel DDR4 RAM and PCIe NVMe SSD storage.

The Matebook 13 AMD Edition is the Ryzen-powered sibling of the Matebook 13 that we reviewed late last year. In his review of the Intel version of the Matebook 13, our executive editor Daniel Rubino called it "A genuine MacBook Air rival that runs Windows." Now, we can see how the laptop does while running on an AMD chip.

The laptop stays cool with a "shark-fin inspired cooling system" that runs quietly while still enabling high-performance, according to Huawei.

The Matebook 13 AMD Edition supports multi-screen collaboration through Huawei Share, which lets you control your PC and your Android phone on the same screen.

Huawei's new laptop should be able to charge quickly, as it comes with a 65W USB-C pocket charger that supports several charging outputs. The included charger also supports Huawei Super Charge for certain phones, so you can quickly charge multiple devices with the same charger.
